What does your dream kitchen look like to you?
Imagine you had a blank canvas, where space and money was no object to creating your dream kitchen. What would that look like? What features would it have? Use your ideas to form a wish list that will help give you some ideas on what’s possible. Some things might seem a bit extreme or out of reach when you first note them down, but by thinking about and researching them in more detail, there could be a lot of your ‘what if’ kitchen that could actually be possible with the space and budget you have. If you’re short of ideas, Buzzfeed has a fun ‘design your own kitchen' quiz that could help give you some pointers.
“Your new kitchen should look like it was "born there." That doesn't mean it has to be the exact same style as the house. (You can put a modern kitchen into a Victorian, for example.) It just means that it has to complement the spaces around it.”
Find some inspiration
Searching for inspiration can help you get some great ideas about how your kitchen looks, what colours it should be and what details you’d like to add. Find ideas on Instagram or browse some home improvement websites to help you find some inspiration. Pinterest is another great source of inspiration for your kitchen, so it’s worth following some home and interior Pinterest boards to help you plan out your dream kitchen. We created a mood board for our first home kitchen reno and it was a great guiding point that stayed in the space until it was all done. Everyone who worked on that room knew exactly the vision I had for it and it helped us all focus on getting as much of it achieved within budget.
Unfortunately, your budget will be the thing that could have the most influence over designing your dream kitchen. While knowing what you can and can’t afford will depend on your own research, consulting with professionals might present you with a better outcome. Consult with experts in new innovative kitchens to give you a better idea of what exactly is possible in your own home. If there are some things that you really want that your budget won’t allow, you might even want to think about saving for longer so that your kitchen revamp is exactly how you want it to be. But creative sourcing and searching is all part of the fun so don't be afraid to look in unexpected places for the solutions you desire.
Consider your layout carefully
Make sure that you give plenty of thought to the layout of your kitchen. When choosing your kitchen layout, think about what you’ll need in your kitchen. Does it need a dining space or a breakfast area? How much storage will you need? Think about how you can split your kitchen into ‘zones’ that will help make it more functional, while also making sure that there are open spaces to give the room an airier feel. Remember to take measurements (measure 3 x!) of everything to ensure you’re not caught short when fitting units or buying furniture that might not fit in your home.
Overhauling your kitchen is an exciting time, so you’ll want to make sure that everything is perfect.
Spend time really thinking about your decisions to help you get the most out of your space and to help make sure you end up with the kitchen of your dreams.
