5 Ways to Dress Your Home Like You Would Yourself

Have you ever thought someone was sartorially the most beautifully put together person, only to then walk into their home and be very confused? Yeah, me too. All their money goes into their wardrobe and clearly not into the space that surrounds it - their home.

Is this you? Do you feel like you nail fashion but have trouble translating any sense of style into where you live? Are you all perfectly groomed but live in a little bit of gloom at home? Wanna change that?

It's all good and it's easier than you think! In fact, let's look at it just like dressing yourself. Here's my fave 5 ways to dress your home like it's your best #ootd!

1. BUILD FROM BEAUTIFUL BASICS

The essential items in any smart wardrobe are beautiful basics and usually anything but basic in terms of quality. They're the little black dress, super soft cashmere, perfect black jacket and the neutral handbag that goes with everything. The same principle applies to building the foundation of a beautiful room. Think a great quality lounge or dining table, a generous rug that frames the space, a neutral wall colour and smart installed lighting. From here you can build character and add interest with ease.

- Coco Chanel

2. LAYERS FOR WARMTH & TEXTURE

When you style an outfit there's often something that you layer - be that a jersey sweater under a denim jacket, knit jumper with a wool scarf combo, or opaque tights and a velvet skirt. Layers add warmth and texture and even in summer - think linens, cottons and lace for example - they make for a versatile and interesting outfit. At home, now add some interchangeable elements of warmth to your great basics. A collection of cushions on the couch in a mix of silk and suede, a mohair throw over the statement armchair for snuggly nights, or less obvious, layer your lighting (ambient, task and accent) to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

“In order to be irreplaceable one must be different.”
- Coco Chanel

3. ACCESSORISE WITH COLOUR & PATTERN

While you're adding layers in your space you often introduce new colours or variations of colour and pattern. Some occurring naturally and subtly in the weave or make of the fabric, some forming shadows like a laser cut pendant light or chandelier with crystals throwing light. But now, when we think about styling a killer ensemble and embracing our personality, we might look for certain details or accessories to complete it. Maybe an outfit is not complete without a hat. Maybe shoes and bags are more your edge and you don't mind a daring boot or monogrammed moment. Take these cues from the way you finish an outfit and finish furnishing your home with art and decor that speaks to your style.

“The best colour in the world is the one that looks good on you.”
- Coco Chanel

STYLE TIP: You might not know off the top of your head what you are looking for, but just like "browsing" in a store, site, Pinterest or Instagram provides the inspiration you need to dress your best, so too will scrolling or strolling for what inspires you indoors too. Don't be afraid to take notes under each of these points about your fashion likes, dislikes, tendencies and things to try. When you're translating that to your interior design you then have cues that will draw you in the direction that feels right for you. Love the uniqueness of a perspex bag? Does a Marcel Wanders stool cut it the same way for you? Work through your faves and see what speaks to you in the homewares department.

4. ADD JEWELRY

Are an all silver jewellery kinda gal or do you like making more of a statement with costume jewellery? When we think about the bling bits of our personal looks we can correlate similar stylings in our home. Think glass based lamps, metallic objets d'art, brass handles, crystal pieces and naturally formed crystals and stones as decor. With luxe-look finishes often "on-trend" it's safe to say they are a staple and are easier to add to your decor than you might first think. You only need look at a modern day bar-cart for plenty of ideas. Surround yourself with beauty at home just as you like to dress feeling elegant, elevated or expensive and pretty soon your favourite room (your wardrobe) will have some stiff competition!

5. TAKE ONE THING OFF

Minimalist, maximalist and everything in between - a good rule of thumb once you've curated the perfect look on you or your room is to look around and take one thing away. It's a 'too many hero's spoil the broth' kinda vibe. You want to give your focal points their moment, and while you might be excited about your new-found flair for decorating, live with it a little and you will soon find a home for every piece. And then, just like your next #ootd, you can switch it up as you please - 'cause true style comes from bending the rules to write your own. Uniquely, beautifully, you.

- Coco Chanel
